SEVEN sapling trees have been planted in Urmston town centre as part of efforts to regenerate the area.

The green initiative was organised by Urmston Partnership and ward councillors and each tree has been sponsored by Urmston businesses such as Richard’s Cakes and Lily’s Cafe.

However, one resident, Jennifer Yates, has decided to purchase one of the trees all on her own.

Mrs Yates, who was born in the town, said she made the decision for sentimental and community reasons and to help Urmston to become greener.

“Urmston is coming together quite well now and I just thought I’d help it along a bit.”

Davyhulme East councillor, Lisa Cooke, said: “I see this as a critical part of the regeneration of our town, it is so important our town is attractive to new residents and businesses.

She added: “It has been amazing to work with the community and see a plan come together, I am delighted by the many positive comments from residents and traders alike.

“These trees signify a new beginning".
