GMP has confirmed there will be no homecoming parade to celebrate Manchester United's double success this season.

Talking about plans for the newly crowned Premier League and and Champions League team Assistant Chief Constable Dave Thompson said: "Early last week GMP was approached regarding proposals to celebrate Manchester United's success this season. It is important to point out that no homecoming parade or event has ever been planned for Thursday 22 May 2008.

"Manchester and Trafford councils were involved in these discussions. As a result of these outline proposals a review was carried out to assess the viability of an event and it was decided that a parade could not take place today, Thursday 22 May, because of the serious risk to public safety and major disruption to the rest of the community on what is a normal working and shopping day.

"GMP's primary concern is the safety of the people of Greater Manchester and the fans of the club. It is right and fitting that MUFC's fans should have the chance to celebrate the club's success this year in the event of last night's win, but they should do this in safety. The last major homecoming event was in 1999 where there were serious safety issues raised regarding the risks of crowd crush. Manchester United is the biggest football club in the world and we believe any event would attract more people than in 1999.

"We have agreed to work towards an event in the summer where those celebrations could take place in safety. We remain committed to work with partners towards a suitable and safe celebration for all fans."

Are we not meant to have a professional police force? The reason we will not have a victory parade in Manchester is not because of the threat of violence its because the GMP do not have the intelligence to handle such an occasion.

are we the only city in Europe that wouldn't have a victory parade for its club winning the European Cup?? It's unbelievable! There used to be parades when we LOST the FA Cup! We've won the European Cup for gods sake!

Isn't it just typical of the paranoid attitude of authorities these days that they should put the dampener on what was a glorious and poignant achievement by United last night. To lift that cup in the 50th anniversary year of the Munich disaster was monumental, and the fans want to show their respect and gratitude to the players and manager who made it possible. That they did it as part of a Double by becoming Premier League champions as well makes it even more amazing. All I can say is the Busby Babes must be turning in their graves today!

Its pathetic! The whole of Manchester was rocking with Rangers fans (with the minority running an absolute muck!) It seems we can accomodate others but not our own? Well done Man United we are all so proud of your achievements.

BAH HUMBUG TO TMBC!

Since I was a young girl (many years ago) fans who could not afford to go and see the games have lined the streets to see their football hero's home. How can anyone deny the fans and the players this after their success in Europe. DISGUSTING! Another cost cutting exercise by the Council disguised as a Health and Safety issue. THE COUNCIL LEADERS ARE PROBABLY CITY FANS!

Why do you need a parade to celebrate a football club for whom you do not play winning two tropies?

Football fans already get the benefit of being able to commit public order offences (shouting offensive language very loudly for one), and I don't think we need to clog up the borough, give an excuse for public nuisance and fill up the public transport system when there's not even a match to play.

Why should residents have to put up with a loas of people celebrating that one mult million £ corporation narrowly beat anothe multi-national conglomerate. What has this to do with football.
We may as well have a parade when their stocks rise on the markets by more than any other clubs....

Steve and Matt, thanks for your educated input. Now get a life.

Well said, Rob. Of course, they could just be City fans, in which case I suppose they can't help themselves, the poor little bitters!

Obviously they would have a MASSIVE protest at the thought of parading the trophies! 32 yrs!

In case Rob's comment does not get deleted:

Democracy's great isn't it, unless people disagree with you, then you don't want them to have an opinion.

Face it, why should taxpayers fund the celebration party for a privately owned corporation? Aside from extra cost, what would such an event bring to Trafford?
