THE COUNCIL is encouraging more residents to receive council tax bills by e-mail, by extending its council tax does not need to cost the earth' campaign.

The initiative, which finished on March 31, will now be extended to the end of June and means the council will continue to donate 20p to charity for every person who registers to receive their bill by e-mail.

Donations will be made to Groundwork, an environmental charity, to fund environmental work in Trafford.

Executive councillor John Tolhurst said: "I would like to thank everyone who has responded to the campaign so far. We have already raised more than £200 for charity, and we would like to increase our contribution."

Last year, the council used nearly 10 tonnes of paper to produce council tax bills and booklets. By signing up for paperless bills, residents can help protect the environment and reduce waste. Paperless bills also save money, which helps to keep the council tax low.

To register for paperless bills visit the council's website at www.trafford.gov.uk and click the do it online' menu and follow the simple registration process

non-charitable and anti-environmental, tut tut.
If you'd done the bill by email in the first place then your green bin wouldn't have got so full.

Ok, green bins are for garden waste, my error. Even so, maybe you should see a compost doctor, then get a big hug from mother earth and you'll feel much better!

Companies often offer a 50p or even £multiple reduction for paperless billing. BT I think offer 50p per quarter, which adds up to £2 a year. As my annual bill is around £150, this is a 0.75% saving, which with a council tax bill of £1000 means the council save £7.50 per year if we use this. They will donate 20p to a charity of their choice (what if it's one we disagree with, or already donate to?) and pocket the remaining £6.30?

Why would anyone agree to that? Why would anyone agree to saving the council money without gaining something themselves?

I can give more money to more worthy charities than 20p a year, and be safe in the knowledge that I'm getting my moniesworth out of my council bill.

If anyone believes that by eliminating the cost of printing council tax bills the council tax will reduce next year, you are very seriously mistaken.

I agree to saving the council money because it's a like a huge pot of funds that is spent on each and every one of us, even you matt. That's right, you could benefit from hospital care, street lighting or even advice on starting your own business, that's the joy of democracy. Let's pull together and pave the way for a greener, brighter future for the children of tomorrow.

If only the money saved would be used to fund better healthcare. Trafford MBC don't fund healthcare, so the money would never go towards that. What it will go towards is paying contractors massive amounts of money to repair roads and pavements, and construct a new town hall.

That is why I don't support the initiative. That, and the fact that it's often useful to get a letter so you have a copy of the bill that you can read and carry around, most people probably print it out anyway, using exactly the same amount of paper - so really it's just a 20p increase in council tax.

Some people are SO negative, i'm beginning to lose hope. Matt - How many bills do you get from the Council a year? I don't think they will save £6.50 on one bill??
James - If they give 20p away and then save 30p on postage, they have protected your poll tax - not given it away.
And Geoff - you have restored my faith in humanity!
