Burst left homes high and dry

HUNDREDS of households across Trafford were left without water after a mains pipe burst.

United Utilities engineers worked on Sunday to fix the pipe on Joseph Glebe Road, Stretford, which ruptured at about 6am.

It left homes in Stretford, Altrincham, Sale and Timperley without water.

United Utilities said it had re-routed supplies from another source to fix the problem and the supply was now back to normal.

This latest problem comes just days after a mains pipe burst on Brooklands Road, Sale.

Shaun Robinson from United Utilities said: "We were able to reconnect the vast majority of customers in the Eccles, Stretford, Sale, Worsley, Timperley and Altrincham area within four hours, by re-routing supply. It took longer to restore supply to some homes in Fallowfield area, with around 1,600 customers off until 4.15 on Sunday afternoon. This was due to the need to build up enough pressure in the re-routed water to supply that area.

"Water engineers are now busy fixing the affected ring main. Customers will remain on the temporary water supply, until such times we are happy to bring the ring main back into service.

"Our thanks to all those affected for their tolerance. Regrettably, incidents of this nature do occur on occasion, which is why we are investing £2.9billion to upgrade our network to secure our water supplies in future."
