A BROADHEATH teenager who lost his hair as a child has overcome the odds to scoop a top award.

Adam Leetch, aged 17, has been named personal achiever of the year in the Cheshire and Warrington leg of the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) North West Learner Awards.

He was presented with a trophy and cheque for £250 by Falklands hero Simon Weston at a glittering awards ceremony at the Park Royal Hotel near Warrington.

The Trafford College student, an apprentice in catering and hospitality at Knutsford Wine Bar, developed alopecia at a young age which caused him to feel shy and awkward about his appearance.

But rather than give up, Adam changed his attitude and instead of worrying about his appearance he decided to overcome his difficulties.

When he started his apprenticeship, Adam still found it very difficult to communicate with customers, but his passion and commitment have helped him to overcome his shyness.

The owner of Knutsford Wine Bar, where Adam works as a commis chef, says he is an extremely talented chef who is a delight to work with.

On being presented with his award, a delighted Adam thanked his family for their support. and added: "I'm privileged and very proud to have just been nominated, it's fantastic."

Guest of honour Simon Weston, who suffered burns on 48 per cent of his body during he Falklands War, said: "It's not easy to get to the final stages of anything, but everyone here tonight has done it and that's an achievement in itself. Education and learning are the best opportunities you can have - you all have that potential, and you can make a difference. Tonight isn't the end of your journey, it's just the beginning."
