Attack on club was wildly inaccurate

WE at Sale Sports Club were both amazed and appalled to read Mr Trainer's letter (Rowdy revellers damage image) published on May 8.

You should be aware that the letter is riddled with factual inaccuracies and we are therefore surprised that, as a responsible local newspaper. you saw fit to publish such a scurrilous attack on the club without any check on the accuracy of the contents.

Mr Trainer quite unjustly and erroneously vilifies the club and particularly the alleged behaviour of its members. During the cricket season (all of two weeks old at the Bank Holiday) the bars were not full of lager-swilling louts' as he would find out if he came here. Players do enjoy a few beers in the evening after matches, but never to the detriment of the local community. We are only too well aware that it is not in our own interests to jeopardise relations with our neighbours and we have a strict Code of Conduct by which our members have to abide.

On the Bank Holiday Saturday, the vandalism to the electrical control box on the Clarendon Crescent field (out of sight of the club premises), as described by Mr Trainer, was attributable to local hooligans, not club members. from his letter it appears that Mr Trainer saw the criminal damage taking place. Perhaps he could have alerted the police?

The mindless morons found it highly satisfying to annoy local residents by continually switching on the floodlights. The club was notified of this a number of times, with both the steward and club members repeatedly going to the field to turn off the lights throughout the evening. The lights were off when the club closed at about midnight.

Sadly, vandalism in the area is something we also have to contend with, from broken signs, smashed windows in the cricket pavilion and vehicles joy-riding in the car park and on the cricket field. It is costly to us both in terms of repairs (we shall have to bear the cost of replacing the electrical control box) and time which club offiials - all volunteers - would rather spend organising sporting activities.

A lot of money has been invested in recent years in developing the sporting facilities at the club. Our members appreciate this and are not the sort of people who commit acts of vandalism against club property. They are justifiably outraged by the wildly inaccurate accusations that were contained in Mr Trainer's letter.

We would be happy to meet with Mr Trainer to discuss his points but we do wish that he, and the Messenger, had checked on the facts before rushing into print.

I strongly agree with Glyns comments. I have been goin down to sale sports club for many years both as a player of sports and as a spectator. Not at any point have i seen or heard of any of these goings on and if there was any bad behaviour i am 100% confident the club would deal with it in the correct manor. so when i read mr trainors comment as was to say the least shocked! all i can say is sale keep up the good work and just ignore what i can only see as jealousy towards a great sports club.

That's absolutely right. It has all been a figment of our collective imagination! I do not know any of the other people who have made complaints, but I can assure you that they are not without foundation. Plastic glasses please.

I can assure you that the club insists that plastic glasses are used by any spectators taking drinks outside the main building, even charging a 50p refundable deposit on them. We do not claim to be perfect, but we do take reasonable steps to prevent any glass finding its way outside of the club.

Mr Trainer has obviously never been down to the cricket at Sale recently as there is little trouble at all. Every time I have had a lager (or two!) at the club, it has been out of a plastic glass - surrounded by a lovely serene atmosphere. I would ask Mr Trainer to think again about his comments, or even come down and see himself.

G'day guys!
Just logged onto the sight as haven't been back to Sale since visiting the rellies back in 04 with me mates. Gotta say that the cricket guys were a fab bunch. Ok - they have had their moments - but who ain't you know. We are all men aren't we? I not afraid to say that while I was there I went through at least three of the hockey team girlies. What your aussie friend is saying is that boys will be boys and the club is always going to have these problems. Pommie Trainer can have his pop but the area as a whole when I was there was a huge market for carefree, rowdy behaviour. The town centre bars like the Waterside was like a meat-market - and as for the kings inn or whatever across the way - I literally had middle aged women trying to pull me off at the bar.
Look guys just play cricket and live life. If you enjoy a beer, enjoy a beer. I'm sure Barry T has had his rocks off while high as kite sometime.
.........keep cool Sale, as me and my sunnies may be back one day.
The K man.

I assume that the SAM has researched the facts and there is actually a Barry Trainor living on Clarendon Cresecnt? Would be quite embarrasing for the local newspaper to print such false slanderous make believe stories

Well anon that would be a waste of the editor's time wouldn't it? The very fact you can write in under the name 'anon' really renders your argument irrelevant anyway. What would the paper do then? Check for someone with the name Anon? Also, isn't the page a letters page? free speech, fair comment etc? As a matter of fact I do know Barry, and it's Trainer not Trainor. Before you slag others off wanting to know an address (I presume to go round and cause trouble) at least read up on a bit newspaper law.

Glad to see the plastic glass issue is seriously on the agenda and that occasionally they are used by the Club. However, it is one thing to be an occasional, or even a regular patron of the Club and another altogether to have to live adjacent to any Social Club, whatever its reputation, so I draw your attention to the responsible posting by the Club President who seems to have an even grasp on the matter. The residents are not fabricating these stories, and are just a tad sick of having their real concerns disregarded, so thanks to the President for his comments, and let's hope the Club will now act to minimise any negative impact on the local community.

Hi i would just like to say as a regular down at scc i just cant understand where all this as come from? in my 20 years in watching them play not once have i ever seen any trouble! the only bit of trouble i have seen is from the neighbours near by. Maybe they are trying to divert the trouble in sale cricket clubs ways! also they always use plastic cups! maybe waldo should get some shoes for his dog!
