A SALE man who lied about a burglary has been fined £80.

The 47-year-old called police and reported a burglary had been committed at his home in Beenham Close overnight on Sunday 27 April 2008.

The allegation turned out to be false and the man admitted he had lied as he had broken in after being locked out and was drunk.

He was given a £80 Fixed Penalty Notice for making a false report and apologised.

Sergeant Phil Seeley, of GMP's Trafford division burglary unit, said: "When people make false reports of crime, it hinders us in assisting genuine victims.

"In this case, this man was hit where it hurts, in his wallet, and I hope it serves as a deterrent to others who may be tempted to do something similar."
