Breastfeeding benefits highlighted
MIDWIVES from Wythenshawe Hospital are highlighting the benefits of breastfeeding.
During breast feeding awareness week (from May 12) they are reminding mums of the health advantages.
These include reduced risk of obesity, diabetes, respiratory tract infection and gastroenteritis for baby and a reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancer for the mother.
Five times more babies formula fed babies are admitted to hospital than breast fed babies.
Community midwife Margaret Biddle said: "Many women find breastfeeding easier than they may have thought. It can be so rewarding and I would encourage all women to try it. Breast feeding should be completely comfortable and if it hurts women just get in touch with their midwives who can provide advice and support."
