I detest council elections. For a start, the only way we in trafford could have removed the conservatives from the number one party in the council was to vote 100% for one of the other parties. So the vote could never have actually changed the makup of the council that much.
In general elections, I usually get some sort of leaflet explaining the policies of the party and what the specific candidate can offer. In local elections, the candidates don't bother to canvas for support. Nobody asked me to vote for them, not even the council leader who was standing in a traditionally conservative ward, and so it was almost impossible that my vote would actually be relevant.
So I was resigned to spoiling my ballot paper and registering my distain for voting for people who certainly don't deserve it.
Then I spotted the independant candidate was a single issue candidate: Stop the Altair Development. I knew they wouldnt win, but any vote for them must be seen as a vote against the development, and is actually the only way I decided my vote was worth casting.
So through process of elimination, I worked out who to vote for.
(Oh and Susan won with over 1000 votes, my vote against her wouldn't have helped.)

Sale Moor Ward.
At last we will be able to get some help from the Councillor , he might listen to the voters and not just take the job for granted.

As the Independent 'Against Altair' candidate, I would like to thank every one of the 137 people who voted for me, whether in support of our campaign, or as a general protest against Trafford's Tory majority. I am gratified that in a national context of Tory gains, Trafford's Tories made absolutely no progress whatsoever. They won Sale Moor by a pitiful 4 votes, but they lost Timperley by hundreds! They must be very disappointed that even with all those anti-government votes, they didn't manage to increase their majority. Those who voted Conservative in the Altrincham ward this time should consider that they have supported a party which thinks it's fine to force an enormous town centre development onto an established residential neighbourhood and to ignore residents' concerns. Perhaps Altair will not directly affect those people. All I can say to them is if Altair goes ahead, those voters had better not complain when Moss Lane closes, when they can't park affordably in Altrincham or drive through and around the town with ease. We weren't able to resource an election campaign like a political party might. We didn't produce any leaflets or go canvassing or electioneering. We just put a few posters up and allowed people to vote for someone other than the usual suspects. The oods were stacked against us from the start - our campaign name wasn't even allowed on the ballot paper and still we got 137 votes! Just think what we could've done with more time and resources! The elections may be over now, but our campaign is gearing up so watch this space. There is plenty more we can do to further our campaign, and will be doing in the coming months, so please continue to back us and hopefully we will persuade Trafford to see sense eventually. Thanks once again to the 35.15% of people who bothered to vote on May 1st and to those who used their vote to take a stand Against Altair!

Sarah misses the point if we had not lost to the Tories in 2004 and labour had continue to control the council there would been no Altair development, no closures of old peoples homes no cutting of library hours and loss of library staff ,no cuts in the the youth service,no cut backs in parks funding, etcThe Tories have two years in Trafford to do their damnest before the next elections with no local elections next year. Those that supported them deserve what they get,but unfortunately it is not the well heeled that will suffer but the old vulnerable and poor
