Rick Bowen catches up with Bowdon-bound Barb Jungr
MOST of us, thankfully, will never know what it feels like to lose two siblings, but that's what happened to singer Barb Jungr.
Does she believe that these deeply emotional experiences have, ironically, made her a better performer?
"I wouldn't say it's made me a better performer but the deeper the well inside you the deeper you're able to go into the music," she says.
Later this week, music fans in Trafford will get the chance to judge for themselves when the artist brings her Nina Smone tribute show to Bowdon's Cinnamon Club. Born Eunice Kathleen Waymon, jazz legend Simone was the voice behind classic tracks like Feeling Good and I Put A Spell On You. She was also active in the black civil rights movement in America in the 1960s. Barb believes it's Simone's wide range of musical influences that make her unique in the world of jazz. Influences that incorporate everything from jazz to American musical theatre.
"She was out there on her own - she's called a jazz singer but actually I think she's just an extraordinary performer in her own right. I think she transcends all the genres," she says.

"I think it's because there's a big emotional content to my work. Music is communicative and it's a way of helping emotions to flow. That's what my musical output is about," she says.
Born in Rochdale, this likeable 53-year-old gets her unusual sounding surname from her Czech father, says she was singing from an early age.
"My dad said, he used to get on the bus and sit me on his knee and he said you wouldn't shut up - you sang and sang and sang," she recalls.
Despite bringing a tribute show to the Cinnamon Club, Barb is an established artist in her own right with six albums under her belt. She's also written several scores for pantomimes and various children's shows and says she loves writing for a young audience. Rick Bowen
