Preview - The Kirov Ballet, The Lowry

THE Lowry is preparing to welcome dance royalty in the shape of the world famous Kirov Ballet, who return to Salford next month.

The critically acclaimed company, from the Marlinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, will present a programme that includes the north west premiere of George Balanchine's Jewels.

Balanchine created Jewels for his own New York City Ballet, but the Kirov was the first company in Europe to stage all three acts in the same evening. This production recreates Peter Harvey's original decor - a shimmering cascade of jewels suspended in mid air - and the dancers wear magnificently bejewelled costumes.

Apart from Jewels, the Kirov is staging a Gala Programme that includes Fokine's romantic one act ballet, Cophhiana, and Petipa's Don Quixote. Created by one of classical ballet's greatest choreographers, it tells the story of the rocky romance between Kitri, the playful daughter of a social climbing inkeeper, and her lover Basilio, a barber who is handsome - but broke.

* The Kirov Ballet presents Jewels on May 13 and May 14, The Gala Programme on May 15 and Don Quixote on May 16.
