SLAVE - A Question of Freedom is powerful enough to move you to tears.

But it should also leave you seething with anger, over the fact that, in our so called civilised society, human beings are being bought and sold like commodities.

Feelgood Theatre Productions bring the heartbreaking and inspiring story of Mende Nazer to the stage of The Lowry this week, and it’s a theatrical experience I implore you not to miss.

Until the age of 12 she enjoyed a carefree childhood in the Nuba mountains of Sudan. She was then sold into slavery after being sexually abused by her captors. If her employer had owned a dog, the dog would have been afforded more respect.

A multi-talented cast bring a number of roles vividly to life, led by Lashana Lynch as the remarkable Mende. Her performance doesn’t tug at the heart strings it rips them out completely and Sale raised actor Danny Scheimann is outstanding as Damien Lewis, the journalist who helps Mende in her hour of need. Director Caroline Clegg has ensured this production hits you right between the eyes emotionally and this production has certaonly made me want to read Mende’s autobiography, on which it is based.

Painfully uncomfortable at times, Slave - A Question of Freedom is, quite possibly, one of the most rewarding theatrical journeys you’ll ever make.
