DESPITE more than 30 years on the stage, Evita has lost none of its appeal and the latest sell-out production at the Lowry proves just how popular the show still is.
Containing some of the most inspiring and famous stage music ever written, the show is a moving portrayal of the life of Eva Peron, an Argentinean woman who rose from relative obscurity to become the President’s wife.
Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s creation looks fantastic on the Lyric Theatre’s stage, with columns and staircases used to represent the grandeur of Peron’s life.
The title role of Evita is one of the most coveted roles in musical theatre and Abigail Jaye is perfectly cast.
Her stunning portrayal of Evita, the woman who won over the Argentinean people and rose to sainthood, captures the audience as she tells the story of the remarkable woman.
Her character’s ruthless and manipulative side is clear to see, but Jaye has the audience loving her by exposing vulnerability and passion.
Jaye’s performance of Don’t Cry For Me Argentina, one of Lloyd-Webber’s best compositions made famous by Madonna, is rousing and incredibly moving.
She shone, with clear emotion in her voice, and played an impressive Evita alongside a likable Juan Peron, played by Mark Heenehan.
A highlight of the production has to be Abigail Matthews’ performance as the Mistress, when she sings Another Suitcase in Another Hall beautifully and Mark Powell is an excellent Che.
Evita is showing at the Lowry until September 18, 2010.
