IT is often difficult to know where to take a child for their first experience of ballet.
The English National Ballet and second year students of the English National Ballet School have solved the problem.
They have created My First Ballet: Sleeping Beauty, an hour long re-imagined version of the classic fairy tale to be shown in five matinee sessions at the Palace Theatre< Manchester, on Saturday, April 23 and Sunday, April 24.
It tells the tale of Princess Aurora who is cursed as a baby by evil Carabosse. Her curse states that, on her 16th birthday, the Princess will prick her finger on a spinning wheel and die.
Her good godmother, the Lilac Fairy, manages to alter Aurora’s spell so that she won’t die but will sleep for 100 years and be woken up by a true love’s kiss.
English National Ballet ‘s Associate Artist, George Williamson, has choreographed it.
George said: “It’s a privilege to be creating this production of Sleeping Beauty which is likely to be the first experience of ballet for children.
“I hope they will leave feeling inspired, with a sense of the magic of ballet and its power to tell a story.”
- My first ballet:Sleeping Beauty is at the Palace Theatre, Manchester from 23-24 April.Saturday performances will take place at 11 am, 2pm and 5pm.There’ll be two performances on Sunday at 11am and 3 pm.
