RIK Gaffney is making his directing debut with Urmston Musical Theatre’s Cinderella making him one of the youngest directors they have ever had.

It's a whole new challenge for the 26-year-old, who is the society's stage manager, a role for which he trained professionally.

When he was 12, he shifted scenery for UMT’s three annual productions and at the same age was a chorus member of a junior production of Oh Rats.

He has, for four years, played lead panto comedy parts such as Wishy Washy with the company.

The most spectacular scene in UMT's current production is when Cinderella’s coach appears.

“The dancers wear ultra violet ribbons creating a magical effect. A white mouse turns into a white horse and a lizard and rat become two footmen,” said Rik.

“The chorus and dancers have got it all down to a tee. It was my idea and my sister, Emma Harris, the choreographer, understands what I want.”

Rik gets on well with musical director, Ed Nurse whose contribution is vital.

As Cinderella, Sam Cooper-Bagnall will be playing her first big role with the company.

“The person with the most to do is Matthew Darnsley as Buttons. He will interact well with the audience. He holds the show together with his comedy and has an amazing singing voice,” said Rik.

Rik has deliberately cast the ugly sisters as women rather than dames. “It is all about being evil rather than funny – and these two ladies are evil,” he said.

He reckons the ball scene will be impressive. “It is ten minutes long and a lot happens,” he said.

*Cinderella is at the Poolside Theatre, Urmston Leisure Centre at 7.30 from February 17 – 20 and 12 noon and 4.00 on February 21. For tickets call 0161 408 1288 or visit umt.org.uk.
