IT'S May and the Eurovision contest is coming so Sale Nomads Musical Theatre have grabbed the chance to parody it.

Eurobeat, a Joseph Weinberger musical, takes cheesiness to a different level.

We are in Sarajevo with local hosts Boyka and Sergei aka Jenny Hollinshead and Stuart Harding.

Jenny said:  “It’s weird.   It’s not like a panto although there’s lots of audience participation.   It’s more like a TV programme.

“I am a former Olympic pole vaulting champion, lifestyle programme hostess and cabaret performer. I wear five glamorous dresses.”

The audience are told their nationality and given a flag and voting slip.

In the interval, they choose their three favourite performances excluding  the country they are given.

Stuart said:   “The second half will be different every night.   It depends on the voting/”

In his UK introduction, after praising our parliamentary democracy and lead in science and literature, he adds “and now famous for football hooligans, spotty dick and a gherkin.”

Each country is described equally stereotypically.

The highlight comes in Act 2 with a Bosnian song and dance routine featuring all the cast.

Media students from Trafford College provide a ‘live’ link with the winning country, a huge screen displaying events in the green room and cameras filming the audience.

Eurovision fans are encouraged to start their euro parties early and see the matinee at 2.30 on May 10, the day of the actual show.

* Eurobeat is at Sale Waterside Arts Centre from May 7  - 10.   Tickets are available from 0161 969 5140 or win free ones from salenomads.org.uk
