Adam Sandler has been named Hollywood’s most overpaid actor – again.

The actor edged out Johnny Depp to take the top spot in Forbes’ annual Most Overpaid Actors in Hollywood poll, having previously topped it last year.

He earned the dubious honour after Forbes looked at the last three movies actors and actresses starred in up until June 2014, and worked out what they were paid and what the films made.

While Adam’s movie Grown Ups 2 was a hit “it didn’t do well enough to compensate for the losses from Jack And Jill and That’s My Boy”, and Forbes estimated that for every US dollar the star was paid, he returned an average of 3.20 dollars (£2.06).

Adam was followed by Johnny Depp, who is a box office winner when it comes to films like the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise but who Forbes said has “been overpaid for misses like The Lone Ranger and Dark Shadows”.

The Tinseltown heartthrob apparently returns 4.10 dollars (£2.64) for every dollar paid.

That was enough for Johnny to nudge Ben Stiller into third place, with the poll highlighting misses like Tower Heist and The Watch and deducing that he returns 4.80 dollars (£3.09) for every dollar paid.

They were followed by Ryan Reynolds, Tom Hanks, Will Ferrell and Channing Tatum.

Denzel Washington was in eighth place, with returns of 6.90 dollars (£4.44) for every dollar paid.

However, the list noted that the Oscar-winner can command hefty pay cheques so his movies have to rake in massive sums for him to offer robust returns.

Sandra Bullock was ninth, and was a surprise addition.

However, Forbes said: “Like Channing Tatum, Bullock is not considered overpaid by Hollywood standards, she lands here because of math. Huge backend payments on The Blind Side and Gravity make her look overpaid.”

The top 10 was rounded out by Gone Girl star Ben Affleck.
