Luke Evans revealed fans may be surprised by how romantic his new film Dracula Untold is, at the premiere in London.

The Welsh hunk was joined on the red carpet by co-stars Sarah Gadon and Charles Dance in Leicester Square, as well as all his family who had travelled from Wales to support him.

The film tells the story of how ancient warrior Vlad the Impaler became Dracula after making a pact with Master Vampire, played by Dance. The deal sees him inflicted with an insatiable thirst for human blood in return for being bestowed with the strength to crush his enemies so he can save his family.

Evans said: "It's about the real man behind the literary vampire, it's his story. It's about the man who walked this earth in the 1400s, his trials and tribulations and what he does to turn himself into a vampire.

"There is a lot of romance in it, it's the main catalyst to why he does what he does."

The Hobbit star admitted he did suffer a few injuries filming all the battle scenes, but insisted being a rugby man, he was used to it.

Evans laughed:" There were a couple. I had a big cut in my eye which is long gone now, but at the time I had a big black eye from it. Made the make-up artist's job much more fun."

Dance, 67, also spent a lot of time in the make-up chair, being transformed into the Master Vampire.

The Game of Thrones star revealed: "I just went to sleep. I'd sit in my chair about five o'clock and then open my eyes about seven thirty and it was done.

"I looked at this wonderful bit of prosthetic work and I didn't have to do very much really. You kind of don't have to act with all that stuff on your face."

Gadon, who plays Vlad's wife, confessed she was relieved to sit out the battle scenes.

"Sometimes I thought I really want to be fighting, but I also don't want to go to the gym at the end of a 14-hour day so I don't think I missed out that much," she said.

Dracula Untold is directed by Gary Shore, best known for creating commercials for global brands including adidas, EDF and UGG, and is his first feature film.

The movie, which also stars Dominic Cooper as Vlad's nemesis Sultan Mehmed, is released in cinemas on Friday October 3, 2014.
