Kevin Bryan reviews some of this week's alternative CD releases The Who,"Live at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970" (Union Square Music)- Union Square's new audio-visual offering captures The Who's classic live set from August 1970, when the four musical malcontents exploded on to the Isle of Wight stage at the ungodly hour of 2 a.m. and stunned the sleepy festival goers with what was arguably one of the finest performances of their long and illustrious career. The splendid 2 CD / DVD package features a generous helping of extracts from the group's legendary rock opera "Tommy," alongside typically energised renditions of perennial crowd-pleasers such as "Substitute," "My Generation" and "Magic Bus."

"Greatest Ever Reggae - The Definitive Collection" (Union Square Music)- The album title may be something of an overstatement, but this inexpensive 3 CD set does supply an attractive showcase for the commercially orientated reggae of the sixties and seventies, drawing much of its infectious musical content from recordings which first appeared on the Island and Trojan labels. Jimmy Cliff, Desmond Dekker, The Maytals and Bob and Marcia all make telling contributions to an enjoyable anthology which also highlights the much more uncompromising sound of outfits such as Culture and Linton Kwesi Johnson's Poet and the Roots.

Shelby Lynne, "I Can't Imagine" (Rounder Records)- Alabama raised and California based Shelby Lynne has finally unveiled the long awaited follow-up to 2011's " Revelation Road," opening her account with Nashville's Rounder Records in the process. The Grammy award winning performer makes her Rounder debut with a typically polished package , bringing her acute country-pop sensibilities to bear on self-penned stand-outs such as "Following You," "Son of a Gun" and a righteously indignant southern rocker entitled "Down Here."

Boys of the Lough, "The New Line" (BOTL Records)- The Boys of the Lough have been hailed as one of the finest bands in Celtic traditional music ever since their formation more than four decades ago, delighting audiences around the world with their sublime blend of jigs, reels and songs. Founder member Cathal McConnell guides the current incarnation of the Boys through another splendid set here, including two fine Delia Murphy ditties , "The Boston Burgler" and "Liffey Side."
