SOMETIMES overtaking can be an absolute joy rather than a chore, and the Audi A6 saloon could possibly turn you into an overtaking fiend.

It has plenty of torque, but it is also incredibly sophisticated and elegant – everything you could want out of an executive car. It’s quiet and refined (whatever the road conditions) and the S Line version has lowered suspension by 20mm compared to the standard A6, which boosts the agility. The four-wheel drive system ensures safe and secure handling.

There is a range of engines on offer in the A6, but I drove the exhilarating 3.0-litre diesel – a beautiful, effortless drive, although needless to say you’ll need to watch your speed on the motorway as it has a habit of creeping up to three figures without you realising.

There’s plenty of standard kit, including satellite-navigation in colour on a 6.5 inch display, full map and voice, maps updated via SD Card and traffic information. The Bluetooth interface allows you to make and receive telephone calls, particularly helpful on longer journeys.

Luxurious leather upholstery gives you really comfortable seats and completes that business class feel.

There is dual-zone climate control, automatic headlights and wipers, and front and rear parking sensors. You’re kept well informed on weather and visibility adjustment changes by intelligent rain and light sensors. Airbags are fitted by the sides, head and in front to make sure no resultant impulsive force reaches the passenger and the driver when the car is involved in a collision.

With 530 litres of boot space, it’s a decent size and inside, the cabin has a premium feel, no expense has been spared perfecting the quality interior.

Options include heat/sound insulation glass, deluxe 4-zone automatic air conditioning, 3-spoke leather-trimmed multi-function heated sports steering wheel with gear shift paddles and a smoking package (cigarette lighter and ashtray), though I can’t see many people choosing that one these days.

This was a fabulous drive and I can’t really think of anything negative to say, apart from the fact that your insurance isn’t ever going to be cheap! Many people compare the A6 with BMW’s 5-series, but my loyalty firmly lies with Audi. Top marks.
