EXPECT an evening of suspense and simmering tension when Altrincham Garrick stages its next production, an adaptation of the Daphne du Maurier classic, Rebecca.

Maxim de Winter, still troubled by the death of his first wife, falls in love with a shy ladies’ companion.

They get married, but on arriving at the country seat, Manderley, the second Mrs de Winter discovers that Rebecca still has a strong hold over everyone in the house.

Particularly the severe and sinister housekeeper, Mrs Danvers, who begins driving the young wife to madness.

The novel was first published in 1938 and trivia buffs may be interested to know it was parodied in a sketch in the BBC comedy series, That Mitchell and Webb Look.

The double Oscar-winning movie was released in 1940 and saw acting heavyweights Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine take on the title roles.
