ADMIRERS of L. S. Lowy’s work can view a new contribution to the Lowry Galleries where its current owners have loaned it for a year

The painting, Glasgow Docks 1947, has been added to the Art Centre’s permanent L. S. Lowry exhibition, The Art and the Artist along with other of his works featuring Glasgow.

Claire Stewart, curator of the Lowry Collection, said: “We don’t know for sure why Lowry was in Glasgow in 1946 when he did the preparatory drawings for this work. But the docks clearly proved an inspiration to him.

"It will have been a familiar sight with the industrialisation of the Clyde similar to that of the Irwell in Salford.

“The hydraulic cranes, sheds and the wide bows of the ships form a colourful backdrop to the bustling figures in the foreground just as the mills and terraced houses provide the scenery for Lowry’s iconic industrial cityscapes.

"In that, they are classic Lowrys and will, no doubt, prove popular with visitors to the gallery.”

In July 2014 the Lowry Galleries were renamed the Andrew and Zoe Law Galleries in recognition of the couple’s £1m donation to the Arts Centre which is a registered charity.

L. S. Lowry: The Art and The Artist is open at the Lowry, Pier Eight, Salford Quays, M50 3AZ from 11 – 5, Sunday – Friday and 10 – 5 on Saturdays. Admission is free. Donations welcome.
