BOWDON based artist Colin Taylor is set for further success as Contemporary Six Art Gallery in Manchester launches his latest solo exhibition, ‘New lines in Space’.

The exhibition will include paintings and drawings developed as part of the commission of 12 paintings for the atrium of No.1 Spinningfields, a new landmark development that sits in the heart of the Spinningfields district of Manchester designed by the award-winning international firm of architects, Simpson Haugh and Partners.

The exhibition will launch with a preview evening on May 31 followed by a three-week exhibition to run from June 1 to 21.

The use of either photography or video to record a buildings evolution is quite traditional, but the series of paintings interpreting the two-year transformation is a more unusual concept.

Colin Taylor said: ” I was commissioned to do the 12 paintings at No 1 Spinningfields when it was quite literally a hole in the ground, and began by drawing from a helicopter, 1,000 feet above the city centre and then as the buildings structural framework began to take shape, from within the site itself.

"The body of work is a painted time-lapse of that reflects the evolving form of the building as it grows within its crowded city centre space. The entire commission has taken months and has generated for more than just the 12 paintings for No. 1 Spinningfields hence the decision to hold the exhibition. When approached Contemporary Six were very excited about this City centre commission and suggested an exhibition of some of the other work.”

Colin records different places - not only cityscapes but also natural environments, mountains, busy streets, or a crowd at a festival.

His work is a form of visual autobiography.

Although based in Cheshire his work goes far beyond and he has had solo exhibitions in New York, Cologne, Washington DC and Paris. This latest commission marks a return to his home ground and is eagerly anticipated.

* The exhibition will run from 1st - 21st June 1 to 21, Contemporary Six, 37 Princess Street, Manchester, M2 4FN
