SARAH Emmott from Stretford, whose doctor suspects that, as an adult, she suffers from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD, vents her feelings about her condition in Declaration, a new play at the Lowry.

She has collaborated with Rachel Moorhouse, from Stockport, to write and direct it for their award-winning theatre company, Art with Heart.

Lack of self esteem has always been a problem so Sarah deserves a pat on the back for her confident and energetic performance in this unusual production.

She clearly puts the case for people with ADHD who seek a positive diagnosis without underplaying the difficulties in getting it.

The condition often goes unrecognised in women but they suffer as much as their male counterparts with symptoms such as hyperactivity, impulsiveness and inattentiveness.

Sarah demonstrates the different way people like herself look at the world. Something as simple as losing a pair of shoes can trigger a panic attack.

She cannot understand why people blindly follow rules, boundaries and traditions and, humorously shows this with a doll called Samantha who represents little miss perfect.

Sarah dresses identically and tries to copy Samantha’s behaviour patterns so different from her own.

Filmed images of her wise and loving mother, her friend and medical experts help to explain the condition.

I must stress that there is nothing depressing about Declaration. It overflows with humour.

Sarah also demonstrates that, in addition to telling her story well, she is a mover and shaker..
