WHAT an inspired piece of casting this is.

Philip Bretherton and Gillian Kearney are great together in Educating Rita, the Library Theatre’s latest production.

He plays Frank, the scotch sodden and disolusioned academic who takes on the considerable challenge of turning Rita (Kearney) into a student able to pass an exam.

This is an 80s Pgymalion really, but Willy Russell has a lot to say in a play that isn’t showing too many wrinkles just yet.

Of course you’re rooting all the way for ths fed up Scouse housewife as she tries to escape her domestic purgatory, but I couldn’t help feeling she’s lost her individuality when she finally finds her feet and can debate with Frank as an equal.

I also get the impression Russell isn’t a fan of academics, suggesting preparing students for exams stifles free thinking. For instance, Frank seems positively envious when Rita hands him an early essay, free from jargon and brimming with unbridled enthusiasm for the subject in hand.

The chemistry between Bretherton and Kearney is so natural it makes for a thoroughly enjoyable night at the theatre and, as well as the actors considerable talents, it’s also a result of Chris Honer’s consumate skill as a director.

I look forward to all his productions like a child looks forward to Christmas morning.
