COUNCIL chiefs are calling on Trafford residents to join the body as it backs the UK wide Lights Out event - as part of the First World War centenary celebrations.
Residents of the borough are asked to turn off their lights on August 4 between 10pm and 11pm and to leave a single light or candle on as a mark of respect for the sacrifices made and to share an hour of quiet reflection.
The lights out event commemorates the British Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey’s famous remark on the outbreak of the First World War.
“The lamps are going out all over Europe. We shall not see them lit again in our life-time”
The UK wide event takes place on August 4 as this marks the centenary of when Britain declared war on Germany.
Apart from the council, Lancashire Cricket Club and Manchester United have promised to support the initiative.
