CAROL Ferro, a 35-year-old human dynamo from Ennerdale Drive, Sale, not only runs a story-telling business but writes short ones herself.

They are Drabble Diaries – 100 stories of 100 words.

Having successfully launched her first Drabble Diary – Drabble Folk and Fairy Tales – Success Stories Publishing has now published her second, Memoirs of a Madcap Cyclist.

It tells funny tales about people who ride bikes. One chapter, entitled Shame on Three Wheels describes Carol’s embarrassment when her father rode down the main road on a tricycle he had found.

Another, Silver Cyclists, is about crazy pensioners on two wheels.

Carol said: “The cycling book is doing well on Amazon. I sold one in Spain yesterday.”

Being restricted to a 100 words can’t be easy. “Often what I write comes out within 10 words of the target so I just adjust it,” she said.

“I am surprised how much I can get into 100 words.”

The front cover is illustrated with bikes and road signs by Jenny Taylor-Manning, a lady Carol met at a business networking group.

Carol rides an old road bike with a basket.

“When I bought it, it was the only adult bike I could get on because I have tichy legs.”

She reckons that’s why she is known as ‘short story lady.’ “It’s because I’m short and I do stories,” she said.

On August 9, she’ll be combining both her skills at Sale Library when she conducts a family story writing workshop for up to 30 children. After reading both her books to them, she will teach them to write drabbles themselves

Despite her stature, Carol cycles five to 10 miles a day and especially enjoys riding the Pennine Way where there are lots of pub and cafes. “It’s good earning your cake,” she said.

One madcap episode was when her chain came off and she had to walk from Firs Road to the bike shop in Ashton village because she didn’t have a screwdriver to open her chain guard.
